Erik Otto

Both D Young V and Erik Otto were commissioned to create stylized versions of the RBMA logo, which will be displayed during the lecture events for the yearly Red Bull Music Academy. Red Bull hosts their music academy, which includes recording sessions, lectures and practice time with producers, vocalists, DJs, and instrumentalists carefully chosen from all over the world, in a a different part of the world every year. Last year RBMA was in Madrid, Spain. This year SF and NYC were selected for the events. View a full list of the lectures here.

You studied fine art and have said that you were influenced by Picasso, Hundertwasser and architectural artists like Gaudi. What were the formative events that led you to become a professional graffiti artist?
I wouldn’t call myself a professional graffiti artist. Things evolve naturally. Graffiti is my favourite pastime and the biggest subcultural influence to have graced my life since an early age. I’ve always painted on canvas alongside graffiti and I’ve been doing exhibitions throughout my career. I felt that to only paint walls, or to only paint canvas, was too stifling. I just go with whatever comes next and try to pull towards it from the heart.

How would you compare the current London graffiti scene to that elsewhere in the UK?
I think it’s always been more cut throat, and more active than anywhere else. This means that you’re less likely to see full colour productions and more likely to see chrome and black tracksides and shutters – it makes for an interesting bus or train ride.

You’ve had great success with both letter-based works and symbols (e.g. the Temple). What’s your preference nowadays?
Any of the above. Emptying spray cans is where it’s at; emptying spray paint while drunk is even better.

How has the London graffiti scene changed over the course of your career?
Graffiti is back in control. Street art half stepped into a historical landmine and got its leg blown off.

It’s been three years since ABOVE‘s website had such a massive overhaul, 200 images were removed and the great news is more than 150 new images were added! New sections have been added too. Check out some photos from a few of them below and peruse the full site here. New images will continue to be added seeing as ABOVE is beginning this year in Cape Town, South Africa and will be traveling to Australia, Europe and the United States for both solo shows and street work.

“birds of a feather flock together! london artist eine and i get on like a house on fire. we both think alike and have many years of getting over on the police. this area of miami has literally 100+ shutters. eine and i asked permission for a few shutters on this street. we started painting the shutters we had permission for hoping that the police would arrive. sooner said than done the police arrived and asked to see our permission slip to paint that shutter. we showed the police the permission slip and most importantly told him not to be concerned as we were going to be painting more shutters in the area. after finishing the legal shutters we took a break for breakfast and bloody marys at a near by restaurant. we returned and painted illegal shutter after illegal shutter whilst the police patrolled the area not at all concerned with us! it was ‘siiiiiiiick’ as eine would say.”

“after eine and i convinced the police that we had permission to paint these shutters. we would start painting a shutter, finish painting it, drink a beer, then move to the shutter next to it and start it all over again…ad infinitum! painting broad day light illegals whilst police watching you from across the street was legend. miami, u.s.a.”

Playground Tactics had a swinging opening on Saturday! Literally, swinging. Spinning, sea-sawing and wheeling around happened too since Brooklyn-based artist duo Skewville made sure that almost all of their installation was interactive. Take a look at the photos below and if you’re lucky enough to work nearby you can always come have some lunchbreak fun!

Tova Lobatz’ write-up in VNA offers new process shots revealing a few of the pieces of Skewville‘s installation including a basketball hoop and fully functional roundabout. Promises of hopscotch and sculptural works made from vintage radios, walkie-talkies, TVs, and game controllers should be enough to make you realize this is not an opening to miss!
