Make an Effort: New Works by D Young V Press Release

White Walls Presents:

Make An Effort

White Walls is pleased to present Make An Effort, a grouping of new mixed media pieces by San Francisco’s own wheat-paste artist, D Young V (David Young). This will be Young’s first solo project with White Walls, after a successful solo show at sister space Gallery 3 in late 2010. The opening reception will be Saturday, July 9, from 7-11 pm, and the exhibition is free and open to the public for viewing through July 30.

The work for Make An Effort is a continuation of Young’s exploration of a theoretical post-apocalyptic San Francisco – a rebuilt world, full of new ideals, technology, religion and language created from scratch. Young poses the question “What would happen if people decided to restart civilization?” He points the viewer in this direction by loading up his new pen-and-ink-meets-wheat-paste pieces with invented and recycled symbols, alongside artistic renditions of current San Francisco residents. To obtain these images, Young worked in collaboration with local photographer Shaun Roberts to perfectly capture these San Franciscans as imagined versions of their own post-apocalyptic selves.

For the exhibition, Young has evolved his work to include new geometric forms, instances of color (which is a departure for the primarily black-and-white artist), intriguing personal references, and many cases of local shout outs – from portraits of fellow White Walls artist Jessica Hess, to incorporating the logo from legendary SF bookstore Babylon Falling into some of the pieces. He is presenting an ambitious collection of artwork for this show: ink drawings, mixed media works, and mural installation, with elegant variation in both scale and complexity.

D Young V is a highly skilled skilled pen and ink artist. Heavily influenced by wheat-paste and graffiti culture, his monochromatic drawings are so graphic, they could even be mistaken as a stencil from afar. With a closer look, the extent of his penmanship becomes obvious. His line work is meticulously detailed, illuminating every stroke and process of the piece. D Young V has a BFA in fine arts from Manhattanville College, Purchase, NY and a MFA in painting from the Academy Of Art, San Francisco, CA. He currently lives and works in San Francisco’s Tenderloin District.

White Walls Gallery has worked for nearly a decade to exist as the premiere destination for urban art in the Bay Area. Combined with the Shooting Gallery just next door, this 4,000 sq ft space is one of the largest galleries on the west coast. Justin Giarla founded the gallery in 2005 with a commitment to furthering the urban art movement, drawing directly from street art and graffiti culture. Named for its plain white walls, the gallery takes a backseat to the real focus: the work of our artists.

Augustine Kofie, Paint-slinging in the UK

We just got a note from one of our favorite artists, Augustine Kofie, letting us know that he’s currently en route to the UK this week to participate in a serious amount of art-related activities. He’s heading out to paint with some old friends, and participate in 2 group shows: The first is in Glasgow at Recoat Gallery, where he will be in attendance – as well as painting a mural very close to the venue. He will be showing 2 hand painted prints, 3 small collage works, and a mid-sized painting on canvas.

He’s also taking part in “West End Rebellion” at Scream Gallery in London. Kofie’s work will be up alongside the likes of Faile, Retna, Banksy, Futura, Swoon, KAWS, Giles Walker, Aroe, Antony Micallef, Adam Neate, Os Gemeos, Herakut, Chaz Bojorquez and Shepard Fairey.

And if that wasn’t enough…Kofie’s coming back to the London area to paint a mural with Remi Rough before heading back stateside. The jet-setting artist will be making a stop in San Francisco later this fall for his solo show at White Walls, which we’re all looking forward to. If you would like to take a look at more of his work, check out his site, Keepdrafting. And stay tuned to the White Walls blog as November approaches!

Intersections- Jonathan Darby’s Mock Favela

Even these amazing photos can’t show all the details of Darby’s favela installation. Intersections: A Dual Exhibit of Jonathan Darby and Adam Caldwell is up at White Walls until July 2nd. Hope you all get the chance to stop by for the full effect!
