New Video of Kevin Cyr! (Spencer Cunningham)

Our own Spencer Keeton Cunningham created a beautiful video of Kevin Cyr installing his Home in the Weeds exhibit at 941 Geary, opening tonight, April 30th 2011, and running until June 4th, 2011!! Kevin Cyr is a man of many talents and the show displays this well; installations, drawings, paintings, photographs, and silkscreen editions are all a part of Home in the Weeds. Even with the wide variety, Home in the Weeds retains an elegant simplicity, a place of refuge from the outside world. Cyr’s installations are set within expanses of wide space, allowing viewers to focus on the art without interruption of focus.

Come visit us tonight from 6-9pm!

Greg Gossel and Girls, Girls, Girls!

Art Nouveau’s Spring issue is here and the title Girls, Girls, Girls lends a clear hint of what the issue’s art is in tribute to- girls! More specifically, pin-up girls in vintage art, a subject whose popularity has only become more and more widespread since it’s inception. Art Nouveau has “compiled pieces, artists and editorials that both evoke the art of the pin-up and push the art direction of the vintage style into new heights,” a notable artist of which is Greg Gossel. Gossel’s amazing art is in fact featured on the cover, as well as within the issue where he talks about his upcoming show at 941Geary. Gossel’s shows have never been less than incredible, so make sure to check back here for updates as we get closer to June!

New Video of ROA in SF (Skate Legs Magazine)

ROA is internationally known, and loved, for his eye-catching murals of animals painted across buildings throughout the world. In his current show, ROA has brought his intricately detailed work inside. New Works by ROA opened last Saturday, April 9th, to a crowd noticeably impressed and for good reason! Working entirely on salvaged metal, ROA created paintings which feature hinged flaps that act as a visual doorway to the underlying structure of the beautiful beasts he crafts with obvious care. It seems almost impossible to look at ROA’s work, consisting solely of animals and their skeletons, without thinking about issues of extinction and over-development. ROA’s work prompts us to consider our relation to nature. Perhaps as Roman and Etruscan oracles would read the entrails of animals to prophesize the future, we can look at these works and consider what future lies ahead for these creatures and the rest of the animal world.

White Walls’ own Spencer Keeton Cunningham of Skate Legs Magazine compiled this video capturing some moments of ROA’s time in San Francisco, as he was preparing for the opening of his first solo debut at White Walls.

Some Great Photos From Eine’s GREATEST Opening!

We wanted to share some rad photos via Gareth Gooch from the opening of Eine’s show GREATEST at White Walls on March 12th. The show came down April 2nd but Eine is always making more and more art, and is one of the participating artist in LA MOCA’s “Art in the Streets,” as is ROA!

ROA Teaser (Arrested Motion)

Arrested Motion recently posted some photos of ROA‘s The Four Horses of the Apocalypse, mentioning the coincidence that it was painted for the White Walls project in New Castle (unaffiliated with us) and that now ROA is opening a showcase of his new work here at White Walls Gallery tomorrow night! The Four horses of the Apocalypse is a new take on the imagery associated with the horsemen of the apocalypse, War, Famine, Conquest, and Death, that are released in The Book of Revelations. Seeing the horses without their riders is perhaps more disturbing than seeing the forces of evil themselves. The pile of skeletal and emancipated animals creates the question of where the riders are and presents the disturbing feeling that they could be anywhere. ROA has the incredible ability of instilling a certain delicacy to his work with the use of expert shading, that makes even grim subject matter a beautiful sight.

You Can Never Be Too Impressed with ROA!

Our friends at Brooklyn Street Art posted a reminder about ROA‘s opening tomorrow night, April 9th 7-11pm, see the event invite and share it on facebook here! BSA mentioned that “ROA paints non stop year round all over the globe on surfaces that are challenging [...]” citing this work on the side of a mobile home as proof . This fact really does serve to make ROA’s intricate painting even more impressive than it already is! It wasn’t difficult to find more evidence of this statement, and we thought we’d share! Thank you BSA! We LOVE you!

MTN Colors Video (WereHaus)

Local artistic video production initiative, WereHaus (you should remember the amazing Mike Shine’s Flotsam’s Wonder World trailer they made for us!) has made a video about the birth of MTN Colors North America, a spray paint developed by graffiti writers themselves. The video shows the team behind the innovation, including President NEON, Vice President Jase, Pastime, and APEX. It’s great to get to hear the passion behind the company and the inspiration of it’s founders. The parallel APEX draws between Montana Colors’ business goals and his own work as a street artist is that the main motivation behind both is to back the history of graffiti while adding new and original ideas to it. NEON speaks of Montana’s support for “both extremes” of graffiti from  “the tradition and heritage” of King 157′s classic burners to the “new heritage and wild style” of APEX, with pride, and we can see why!

MTN Colors: The Original Since 1994

“As word about a writer-designed paint spread from Barcelona to San Francisco, the graffiti world witnessed an explosion of unique styles. Innovative sketches could finally make the jump from the page to the wall. Burners from coast to coast flaunted a renewed sense of self-expression. Follow the story of MTN Colors North America and hear the writers’ firsthand account of what it means to keep America’s artists supplied.

Montana Colors: The original paint company.”

Montana Colors  sponsored Eine‘s show with us last month, GREATEST, and is sponsoring the Indoor Mural Project at 941Geary this month, where you can see the work of Montana team APEX, Chor Boogie, and NEON. And don’t forget to start getting excited: Apex has a show with us next month, May 14th- June 4th!

Keep up with the beautiful filming of WereHaus using the links below. They always have their hands on a wide scope of  incredible projects, some personal favorites are the Black Scale Fall/Winter Lookbook, footage from a last minute N.E.R.D. concert here in San Francisco, and a talk with Joshy D. of Rebel8.
