A Look into Hugh Leeman’s Studio

Hey kids, we got an e-mail from artist Hugh Leeman today – and he’s put together an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at his studio, some new work that he’s currently in the middle of and plenty of tiny, biting pieces of wit. It’s a guided tour, courtesy of Hugh Leeman himself, check it out:

“Hey all,

Minimize the porn you were watching, or whatever it is you do on your computer and take a virtual tour of my studio. This morning someone took a sign off my door that said “no spray please”. It had been there 4 years. Meaning no pest control spraying in my studio in 4 years. I have honestly never had a bug problem even though my neighbors, who get pest control sprays regularly have plenty of issues with pest. The lesson here is, if you have a pest control problem your only real solution is dousing them with Montana 94 spray paint.”

“A process shot of a brand new painting, just started with the layers and washes, maybe its a landscape, maybe not.”

A Good Morning for a Give Away!

White Walls, Shooting Gallery and 941 Geary started a give away this morning! For every 100 likes on our Facebook Page, we are giving away a book from past artists to a randomly selected facebook friend. Once we hit 1,000 followers we’ll be giving away artist prints! Tell your friends and coworkers and family and even your “didn’t we meet once at a party?” acquaintances to ‘like us’ because the more followers we get, the more we’ll be giving away!

Maggie Pike talks with Eine (Hi Fructose)

Maggie Pike talks to Eine about “Happy Graffiti,” the SF font and more in her interview for Hi Fructose:

“[Pike:] I first started following your work after seeing an image of your piece that spells out “Vandalism”. I think it’s a great piece that makes the street art vs. graffiti debate approachable to a wider public audience. What’s your take on the two?

[Eine:] I think it’s changing but, people see somebody with a can of spray paint and they think graffiti, tags, find the police. People are scared of graffiti, and that was the reason I wrote “scary” and things in that way. People are scared if you can come down my road and do your tags, does that mean you can come down my road and steal my car? Does that mean you can break into my house? If you can paint something without getting caught, what else can you get away with, without getting caught? So it’s a reflection of how under policed or under cared for a neighborhood is. However, I don’t personally think that’s true.

Vigilante Vigilante

The anti-graffiti vigilantes, or buffers, are not new characters to the world of  graffiti, but Vigilante Vigilante is a documentary that brings these people into light. “One of the buffers, Joe Connolly is actually a fan of graffiti art, but only in the confines of a gallery.  The film opens up a conversation about where art is allowed to be art and who is allowed to do it. It questions why as a society we are so willing to look at giant advertisements but can’t stand the idea of a wall covered in graffiti art,” says Robin Griswold.Vigilante Vigilante followers buffers as they take any means necessary, sneaking out in the night to buff bombs and illegally paint over other people’s property, driven by a dedication to eliminate any trace of tags, stickers, or wheatpastings.

Jonathan Darby’s “Favela” at Signal Gallery, London

White Walls artist Jonathan Darby just opened up a solo show last week titled “Favela” at Signal Gallery in London. Supported by CARF (Children At Risk Foundation), Jonathan’s work in this show focuses on the neighborhood children who have been orphaned or abandoned by their parents. These children are left with no option but to live in the favelas, or slums of big cities in Brazil; where drug dealers and violence flourish unchecked by authority. Some of the proceeds of this show will be donated to CARF.
