Exclusive Video Interview: Recognition of Hugh Leeman
In anticipation of Recognition opening Saturday, August 8th
Hugh Leeman’s wheat pastes are seen throughout San Francisco; on billboards, street signs, buildings and even on canvas. His subject matter deals with the people on the streets, mostly in the Tenderloin District. Giving food and clothes in exchange for conversation and a few quick candids, make him a popular fellow amongst the tight nit homeless community. His works carry stories of people hoping to be heard and acknowledged. However, painting them also convey imperfections illuminating his subject’s lives as well as his own, reminding us of society’s deficiencies.
With the help of Hugh Leeman, Joe Lumbroso and Jillian Mackintosh, we put together a quick introduction to who and what Hugh Leeman’s art represents.
